tTrue purpose of this blog

This blog was set up at Charlie's suggestion to provide a diary of my upcoming Semester at Sea trip around the world. Sofar, as you can see, it has consisted of my trying to find out how to work this blog..
OK, its time now to make some comments about how the plans for the trip are progressing. First, the more I learn about this the more interesting it becomes. I would like to refer you to www.semesteratsea.com so that I don't repeat the information which is already online. My decision to go on the trip was first motivated my desire to get out of the winter cold here, and then to go on the ocean. I was finding that cruises did not look like my cup of tea. I don't want to dress up for dinner, play bingo, and eat and drink, and I had the feeling that the people would not be my kind of people I like adventure even though I am getting too decrepid to participate in the things I would really like to do (e.g. a river trip in S. America with OARS). The other thing I wanted to do was go to the far east but I didn't relish the thought of a really long airplane flight. So when I first remembered about SAS I knew that it fulfilled many of my requirements: the people would probably be interesting, I would get to China by boat etc. I had no idea that it would become so completely absorbing in trying to decide which classes to audit, which activities to volunteer for, which trips to participate in on shore. I am still in the process of figuring these things out and will write about them in the next few days.

The other big question was could I afford to go? Then SAS came up with a 2-for-one plan for this voyage. They found me a roommate with whom I am now corresponding. My financial adviser said I would have to die a year or two earlier but since that would bring me still to more than 100 it seemed quite do-able. Very many thanks to all my kids for buying my house and letting me live in it. Without that there would be no way.

Ha. I did it again. This time of Lucy at Sun Valley. Maybe I know how now for a few minutes.
